Following on from last weeks post I wanted to talk about something that many of us are facing, will face or have faced in the past. Procrastination!! It’s a dream killer and I was the king of it, at least in terms of chasing down my own dreams. The biggest reason I gave was that I wasn’t ready or I wanted it to be perfect. Then I embraced the principle of imperfect action!
I had owned the domain for this website for 16 months before I published my first posts here. Why did it take me so long? Because I wanted it to be perfect of course! After a conversation with one of my many teachers I soon realised that in order for it to be perfect I had to do something, I had to start, even if it wasn’t perfect. The thought of it filled me with dread. This was 4 months before I had even spoken to a web designer or explored the possibility of using a wordpress theme.
I am happy to say that now I am embracing imperfect action in many ways. Putting up this website is one of the best things I have ever done for myself in terms of gaining momentum. It’s not perfect. The writing isn’t brilliant (yet!). And it will improve as I keep doing it. This is true for anything new, for anything that stretches our boundaries. Taking the first step is always the hardest and until that first step is taken then you have nothing but a dream that will stay a dream until you take action, take that first step.
As we approach the end of another year and start to think about goals and resolutions for next year it’s a great time to think about taking those first steps into something new, to start the journey to realising a dream. Taking action, even if it’s imperfect action, is better than doing nothing but thinking about it. You’ll never know if you like it until your in it. So, as a good friend of mine says:
“Suck it and see!!”
Waiting gets you nowhere, action gets you where you want to be. Start the balling rolling, gain some momentum, take that imperfect action that you’ve been trying to make perfect!
